So… is Pixelfed really like Instagram? It seems to be really photo focused. As in: Actual photography. While Instagram is much more personal often, with selfies and so on. And from everything I’ve personally seen, it seems that selfies on the fediverse are like a huge no-no. No one is stigmatized for doing it, but no one is doing it. I don’t know if what I’m saying is clear.
it’s just got a photography-centric userbase i guess. how it’s used is down to how people choose to use it :p
it’s a platform for personal posting if you want it to be
Yeah but, a platform is also a culture you know? I don’t want to go there and do whatever, and changing what it is. I want to respect that. It’s like Lemmy, I came here wanting it to be it’s own thing, not just another Reddit and I’m trying to be careful in my usage.
Platforms can handle multiple cultures and the cultures will continually change and evolve. I certainly wouldn’t worry about harming Pixelfed by posting more personal photos. People don’t need to follow you if they don’t want to.
Instagram used to be more photo focused too when it started off, I imagine if it gets more of the average user crowd to switch over then it will revert to a more instagram like feed.
it’s based mostly on old Instagram which was way more photography-focused than it currently is.
It’s also basically used as a image hosting place for artist on other platforms on the fediverse as many servers on the microblogging federated platforms do not allow or severely limit multimedia uploads. (same thing happens with PeerTube and Funkwhale and videos and audio respectively)
If you’re on iOS check out this amazing Pixelfed client. It’s beautiful and minimal. I adore it. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vernissage-for-pixelfed/id1663543216
And the Pixelfed dev is also working on a kbin app!
Might want to start using this ASAP before F*ckbook/Instagram/Meta figures out how to block this
It uses the zip archive feature that they allow you to request and export so at least it doesn’t use a direct connection or API. I think there is also some EU rule or something about requiring it because Dansup was asking about filing a complaint because of the export format being convoluted or something, not sure of the details but hopefully that means there’s some legal weight to the export feature sticking around.
Yes the EU has the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which among other things gives users the right to request their data back from platforms.
It’s regulation with teeth since many of the tech multinationals have already had multi billion dollar fines. The fines can be up to 4% of global revenue.
It should be noted that the article is 10 days old and bug fixes/improvements for the Instagram import tool are in the works.
Interesting!
Sadly the only reason I’m on Instagram at all are family and friends… wish I could move them as well.
Why not do both? And then be sure to casually ask “so what’s your Instagram and Pixelfed?” (Not on either, but I’ve been told this works).
Yeah, that could work. The “problem” though is that I mainly post on Instagram to keep in touch with friends and family.
Not sure what I’d post on a network where no one I know is subscribing. It’s not like I’m a good photographer or anything.
That’s the whole problem with any social app right. Would be so happy to ditch Whatsapp for better alternatives but what’s the point if no one I know is there.
Glad you guys are here though :p
Yeah. It’s easier to switch out reddit since that’s never really eas about the social aspect. I was only there for the customized feed of interesting topics.
Seems I’m getting both that and a lot more social aspects over here. Feels like I’ve soon posted more here then I ever did on reddit.
Me too I think at least I am commenting more often.
Yeah, same. Not creating all that many posts of my own, but still probably more than on reddit. At least if you count posts per unit of time :)
oh nice, I was unaware of pixelfed. Ill have to check this out. cheers!
Hell. Yes.
I want to slowly transition over to Pixelfed and this makes it so much easier! Looking to grow an audience so I can’t 100% leave Instagram just yet but being able to pull my posts over will help the process of bringing my followers with me 😄
If anyone has an idea of how I can migrate my data through, please help! :p
I exported my instagram data about 2 years ago when I delete my account. However, it was exported as a HTML file, not JSON. Pixelfed is only allowing imports in JSON format, and I don’t know how to go about “converting” them (if possible), and even if I did, there just seems to be so many files that I wonder if it’s feasible?
you can try asking https://mastodon.social/@dansup He is the creator and dev of it. I believe he mentioned a few weeks ago wanting some examples of older data so he can add support for it.
that’s the obvious suggestion! thanks, i don’t know why i didn’t consider asking the dev. i sent a message on mastodon. i’ll add an update here if i get a response :p
