Hundreds of great tracks on both The Antifascist Black metal Network (hint, its not just Black Metal, there’s playlists for Doom, Thrash, Drone, Dungeon Synth, Hardcore etc etc) and its sister channel Antifascist Steel for more non-extreme subgenres. There’s also Catacombs of Heresy, ATENEO OCULTO and Brathory channels too.

All participating bands have given full permission for these channels to stream their stuff. And remember there are a few Invidious instances still up and running as well as things like FreeTube, Piped, Grayjay etc.

But its impossible to not notice! Or find aggravating!

At the moment, apart from Russia, you might’ve noticed the US is going through a bit of a sticky phase with its once-friends.

Which will only matter if those instances are hosted in the US, which a lot aren’t.

I get that federation of content is one of the main selling points of the fediverse but doesn’t there also come a point when the format of the content plays a part? Isn’t there an argument to be made that content posted to one type of service (link aggregation) doesn’t need to be shoehorned into the format of an entirely different type of service (microblogging)?

Can verify that photogimp is brilliant. As well as the interface it also creates photoshop like keyboard shortcuts too. There are one or two things not quite right but on the whole its a life saver.

If you stick to the apps that are indicated as being well supported it’s good. The main reason I use it is because I’m part of a team that includes people not comfortable with the command line so having a web interface to manage a server means not everything falls on my shoulders.

What I’d really like is LibreWolf level privacy protection whilst the browser is running but that allows me to retain cache, history etc but also encrypts everything locally when the browser is closed and is password protected and only decrypts everything when the password is entered.

And it’ll stay that way until people use, and keep using, this space. So, to use an overused phrase, be the change you want to see :)

There was some talk awhile ago of the devs maybe extending feeds beyond Communities to Posts and Comments too but I don’t think it ever got off the ground. Would certainly be way easier to do what I think you want if they did exist.

I pay Bitwarden the tenner a year as I have no reason to distrust them and they’re definitely providing a more reliable, securer service than I can self-host.

I also do an encrypted export once per week and store that export to an encrypted cloud based service and an encrypted USB stick. Takes 2 minutes.

Bandcamp is still OK for me and I listen to some fairly obscure stuff.

Just to offer a heads up - there’s a new solution/site which is currently in Beta but is backed by good people (musicians). It needs an influx of music diversity (lots of metal at the moment) but if it gets that when it comes out of beta then it could very well be a good Bandcamp replacament - Ampwall

Oh I’m sure the 'core bands are much better live than recorded - I haven’t had chance to see LS yet but I will if they head over here.

Yeah, your comment about standing in a silent crowd watching a great party from a distance is exactly how I feel about stadium shows.

I think (and this is just my personal opinion) - the 'core stuff sounds too overproduced if that makes sense? I like to hear a bit of feedback or fingers on the fretboard or just some example that shows me its being played by humans lol.

Its not terrible music by any means, despite what some of the more gatekeepy tyes say, and Will Ramos of Lorna Shore has a truly awesome vocal talent but it just all feels a bit…I dunno…lifeless and flat. I do like Worm Shepherd though of that subgenre, they’re not afraid to slow it down a bit and put equal emphasis on the guitars as the drums and vocals.

Did you not get to see Accept then? Shame, they’re awesome live.

All those names I mentioned can still draw a massive crowd. Trouble is, they know it and set ticket prices accordingly. I also personally am not a fan of seeing bands in stadium sized arenas. If a venue is so big they need to erect huge TV screens you’ve kind of missed the point of seeing a live act IMO.

A lot of younger people (younger than me anyway, which is most people these days) seem to be getting into metal via deathcore. I know deathcore is not popular amongst metalheads but I don’t really mind it. Its not exactly my thing but its OK. I see younger people going to see bands like Lorna Shore, Spiritbox, Slaughter to Prevail etc. There also seems to be a lot of post-black bands getting bigger here in the UK - Hundred Year Old Man, Ba’al, Hidden Mothers are all on the verge of something.

In terms of bands that people outside of the community might also know - Slipknot, Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, maybe Judas Priest are the only names I can think of that have entered mainstream consciousness. By which I mean that people know the names and that they’re metal bands even if they’ve never listened to metal/rock in their lives.

I think everyone else is only ‘big’ internally to the community. So we know that (for example) Amon Amarth are a big name that could headline a festival but anyone who’s not into metal wouldn’t have a scooby who they even were.
