The SSO tax kills me. I just want to auto log into things. And my stupid password manager doesn’t respect subdomains, so it shows me 100 credentials on each site I host.
Which password manager? I had the same problem with BitWarden until I found a buried setting to tweak each password domain. Maybe there’s a badly advertised feature in yours, too?

It’s really annoying to go into each entry for items in my local domain and change the detection to host and do that for every service I spin up.
You can change the default setting for Bitwarden, which works well. If another site changes their login subdomain it can be a bit annoying, but worth it for me for better local domain separation.
This is just from my experience with Bitwarden, but if a site changes it’s login subdomain, you will have to search Bitwarden for the last subdomain, go ahead and log in and Bitwarden should ask ‘Do you want to update Bitwarden?’
Yep, or I just tell it to auto fill after finding it, and it asks me if I want to save the new domain to the site while auto filling.
I’m on board with this. It sucks and it makes things a lot easier to be able to have SSO.
But I’m also peeved the SSO tax is nearly always in the enterprise tier and never in the first paying tier. Even if you’d want to pay for it, the enterprise cost is usually a multitude in price with features you likely don’t need.
They just know companies have policies that enforce SSO for compliancy reasons and are forced to pay.
But as a self hoster the enterprise tier is even more disgustingly expensive.
But the open source projects we use and love also deserve contributions ( financially ). But as a self hosted there’s also a financial incentive to self host and not take everything as a SaaS ( besides the obvious take control of your data ).

And that’s it. Self-hosted and open source software is a double-edged sword. Developers have the freedom to build and share whatever they’d like, but that same freedom also allows them to make unpopular decisions No, you are not entitled to anything from software you haven’t paid for.

I mean sure, he’s not technically wrong, but it also implies that while Developers have the freedom to perform these rug-pulls (they do), the author simultaneously wags their finger at the people who have equal freedom to react the way they have.
Developers (companies) are not entitled to be free from criticism or backlash for acting shitty.
If I write some software and put it on my GitHub then you come along and install it, that does not mean we now have a contract the binds us.
What do you think the license is, exactly?

Similarly, there’s no binding contract that says when you remove features from your software’s community edition in order to drive more profits without any added value, that I’m disallowed from criticizing you for it.
The users will have to deal with the loss of features, and you will just have to deal with the criticism.

I didn’t take it as such. Sure, criticize and backlash all you need to feel comfortable again, but at the end of the day, open source dev teams pretty much chart their own course. That also applies the the entire kingdom of software, hardware, etc. Yes, they may lose customers or users, but it’s still their lump of clay to mold as they see fit. If they go tits up because of said rug pulls, then they go tits up. Life will continue and other options will be chosen.

This is not insight. You’re using so many words to say nothing of any substance. The fact that you’re saying this in response to the backlash is an implication that this is a reason people shouldn’t complain. If that’s not what you meant, you’d wouldn’t have said anything at all.
