This seems to be on Floatplane (?), but has been posted publicly on Discord several times so I’m ok forwarding it here too. From the discussion, they plan to release this on youtube shortly. edit: Now updated with the youtube link. It’s cool that you can change the link after submission on Lemmy!
Any summary of what happened?
On 13/8 Gamers Nexus posted this video: https://piped.video/watch?v=FGW3TPytTjc called ‘The Problem with Linus Tech Tips: Accuracy, Ethics, & Responsibility’
Same day, 3 hours latter Linus posted this response on the LTT forums: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1526180-gamers-nexus-alleges-lmg-has-insufficient-ethics-and-integrity/page/16/#comment-16078641
On 14/8 Gamers Nexus posted their HW news video with a response: https://piped.video/watch?v=X3byz3txpso
Late on 14/8 or early 15/8 ex LTT employee Madison posted on Twitter/X about why she left: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1691693740254228741.html
Then this video came out
video was likely shot way before the Madison accusations and the release scheduled and almost certainly has nothing to do with the accusations
just for anyone thinking the timeline on that matters.
I still haven’t seen: have GN given any reasoning for why they didn’t reach out to LMG before releasing their video? If I remember even with other companies they’ve called out in the past they usually try to at least get a comment.
I’m not an LTT defender: their content has been cringe click-bait ever since they built a studio. But it seems odd both. Also it seems like a weird time to try to drive for change… Linus just acknowledged that he’s not great at running a large company and they are transitioning to a new CEO. It kind of feels like all this is criticizing a management structure that is already halfway gone anyways.
Steve directly addresses your question in both his videos at some point. He states that he did this to avoid the company (he is not making this about Linus, he is directing this at the conglomerate that is LMG) attempting to muddy the timeline and impact the journalistic integrity of the piece. Low and behold, even without reaching out for comment, Linus did in fact attempt to muddy the timeline and undermine the legitimacy of the piece. So exactly what Steve feared happening, is exactly what LMG did, sadly
Why did they need to reach out?
GN addresses LTT shit that they’ve publicly posted, and criticize what Linus has said, done, and repeatedly double downed on, on his own public pedestals of Twitter, Forum, WAN Show, Youtube Channels, Etc.
Giving Linus early warning would have done nothing but give Linus a chance to pressure GN into not doing it, and given Linus time to manipulate the narrative… Behavior he was already caught trying to do with his Forum post after the GN video came out, where he tried to make it sound like he had already settled things with billet, When he never even bothered to contact them until AFTER the video came out.
Not every goddamn journalistic story needs a comment from the subject, especially when its about the subjects very public bad behavior
He goes in to details about that in this video.
That does feel a little but beside the point to me in light of the Madison tweets though, they have bigger problems now.
GN talks about that at the start of their second video. It’s phrased as “journalistic best practices”: https://youtu.be/X3byz3txpso?t=48s
Here’s the story so far: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/gamers-nexus-vs-linus-tech-tips-billet-labs-review-controversy
It was compounded by Madison speaking out about why she quit: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1691693740254228741.html
