I feel like non political posts are controversial more often now than they were before. Ive seen it on some communities I visit often.
Maybe I’m seeing smth that isn’t there.
Maybe its to do with more reddit migrations who aren’t as accusatomed to Lemmy?
Has anyone else noticed it?
I haven’t seen a huge shift overall
What I have noticed is more early down votes that later get raised back into the positive.
Not sure why it is, though it did roughly coincide wit the most recent reddit migration. But that isn’t enough to assume causation. It’s a possibility, just not conclusive since it could be any number of things.
Yep same. This was always a thing on dbzer0 for me, now it’s everywhere.
Same here
It does feel like there’s a new wave of change, I have no idea if it’s due to new reddit refugees or general discontent. But yes, there does seem to be a lot more down voting, more quarrelsome comments, less cohesion within some communities.
There’s also been a few posts sprinkled across instances discussing some accounts that do nothing but down vote. No comments, no posts, just down votes
Yep I’ve heard of the downvotes only accounts too. Infact I’ve heard of admins wanting to remove em too
Maybe we could make it so when you get an upvote you “spend it” when you down vote? Would also encourage everyone to upvote more too.
Dont need anymore gamification of social media. Best just to ignore it imo
Downvotes impact visibility of content
I suspect checking the data isn’t possible?
You can use tools like https://lemvotes.org/ to have an idea of what is happening on a specific post
Not always true, instances can defederate lemvotes so that it doesn’t function I believe.
Recently I learned that it does not work anymore with lemmy.ml, so its probably because of that
Yea, .ml had defederated with it, but any instance can if they want.
Define nonpolitical.
Even stuff like science facts or memes.
Posts that neither directly talk of countries, governments, ideologies nor directly imply anything about em
I think people are tired of that type of internet culture.
The culture of things that are not inherently political?
Memes in general… Are just a waste of my time imo.
why don’t you/they just block meme communities then? downvoting memes because they are memes does not make any sense when they are posted to communities made for that reason
It’s increasingly hard to find things that are like that for everyone. It’s an unfortunate trend that means I have to very aggressively curate my feeds to keep from being dragged into it.

I don’t see it happening here yet, but your comment now has me on alert. I escaped Reddit to get away from all that ad hominem and straw man indignation crappola. I was happy to see the Lemmy sign-up process was more extensive than just a captcha and email confirmation, but in the long run it won’t be enough. I think ultimately it’s the decentralization that will have the biggest protective effect.
if it ever gets the size of reddit, it will have some of these disadvantages, yeah. we will mostly stick to the more niche comms or instances like back on reddit.
So you’re saying that nonpolitical posts are getting more downvotes?
Yeah normally I look at the percentage upvoted on a post, I used to notice high 90s for most posts, with 80s being very low in most circles. Now I’m seeing a lot more 80s and shockingly common 70s too.
Again ignoring news comms or political comms.
That’s a very cool observation. I don’t know what to do with it, but it can definetily tell us something.
Maybe there was a shift in comment tonality as well?
I certainly feel there’s more negative opinions about Lemmy too. Which everyone is free to have. But a rise is … interesting
This was posted a few days ago and I pointed out how “why are men” is the kind of language that pushes people to the manosphere and we should be using more person specific language to talk crap about those types of people. I got downvoted. I called out the downvoters and got further downvoted for talking about downvotes. If there were good people on lemmy that wouldn’t have happened. My comment on sexist language got twisted into a comment about downvotes all because someone clapped back and vote momentum.
