Huh, maybe I should give it another try then. A couple of months ago, I was getting nasty graphical glitches pretty frequently under Wayland. I’ve heard the upcoming 545 driver fixes a bunch of Wayland compatibility stuff, too, so maybe it’s time to try it again.
I find day-to-day desktop use easier with a better workflow in Linux, personally, but yeah, while there are plenty of games that run without any tweaking, there are some that will take extra time and effort to get running. Windows is def easier for gaming, especially if you’re not familiar with Linux. There is a learning curve, for sure.
Honestly, if you use Proton-GE’s FSR feature for games that don’t offer built-in FSR/DLSS + GameMode, you can def beat Windows performance in some Windows-only games. I know it’s kinda cheating, but it does net you higher FPS on the same graphics settings.
Hell, Wayland itself is broken for me on Nvidia. lol
I wonder what the full scope of privacy benefits might be here? Obviously, if you log into your account and interact with videos, YouTube will be able to see that–but are you protected from other forms of tracking? If you don’t opt to login, how private is it really? With NewPipe, I know it’s completely private, whereas with Vanced, there were some inevitable privacy holes. I’m really curious where this application falls in all of that. It’d be nice to see a breakdown of what this app does and does not do for one’s privacy.
I’ve been using it for a long time. I’ve personally found that there is essentially no impact on gaming performance–or if there is, it’s so slight that it’s totally negligible on midrange hardware, especially with feral gamemode. It might be more impactful on low spec PCs, I would assume, but I’m not sure of that. In my case, it’s plenty lightweight and offers lots of customizability.
Newpipe + Sponsorblock is a really good option.
There’s an app on F-Droid simply called Video Transcoder that should be able to do this for you. You can trim clips, change resolution/bitrate, change file formats/containers, and other simple things like that.
I didn’t know that we did, but yes, apparently! lol :O
That is awesome.
Hmm, I wonder if this could be aadapted to a Stremio plugin.
Can… Can we make that? lol Like community effort, get a big-ass spreadsheet going, compile the best of all the old memes in the best quality we can find, bundle em up, and get that going?
There is no good free VPN. Proton is the only one with a free tier I’d trust, but again, it won’t help with stuff like this. VPNs are expensive operations to run. If it’s free to use, there’s basically no chance that they aren’t monetizing it in a shady way.
Mullvad is $5/month, you don’t have to subscribe (you can buy a single month), and they accept multiple private payment options. I would highly recommend shelling out the $5 to protect yourself over risking it with a free VPN.
I mean, if an event is walled-off and admission is charged to spectate the event (a movie screening, concert, ball game, etc), you could absolutely argue that it’s stealing–but it depends on what the ticket price covers. Does it just buy you a seat? If so, then the people inside aren’t paying for the content either, just for a seat. It would be stealing to go in and sit down, but not to stand outside and watch. If the ticket price pays for access to the performance, then yeah, it’s stealing.
But is it immoral? Idk. Is stealing as an act always immoral? If you’re starving, is it immoral to steal from big chain grocery stores to feed your family? Is it immoral for a homeless person to sleep in an abandoned house that’s techically owned by a bank but they’re not doing anything with it? Many would say those things are not immoral. Some would say it’s immoral that our system allows for people to be without food or shelter when we have so much excess. But then there’s entertainment. Is entertainment a need? Is it important for our mental health? Is it a luxury for people with time to waste? Is someone losing something? If so, who? Do they deserve it? Are they earning it legitimately?
Morality is weird and complicated. It’s often incredibly subjective. What kind of world do you want to live in? Do you believe art and entertainment should be free? Do you believe artists should be paid? Do you believe event venues should be paid? What do you support? Those aren’t meant to be leading questions at all, but they are things you should think about. What do you believe in, and are your actions in line with those beliefs? Who do you want to be?
That’s just my 2¢.
I’m using the Massdrop HD6XXs. They sound phenomenal, IMO.
If privacy is your goal, Mullvad is the way to go, IMO. We’re lucky to have a handful of decent VPN options rn, but Mullvad is an excellent product at maybe too good of a price.
Idk how well it works for region-locked content, if that’re your thing. I haven’t used it to get foreign Netflix content or anything, but privacy/security-wise, it’s excellent.
