I understand your guess, but no, that essentially isn’t possible

iirc battery function management is supposed to happen at a firmware level. So hypothetically it shouldn’t be effected by what os you install. I think what you experienced was just a byproduct of keeping it plugged in 24/7

Linux@programming.dev•Why Flatpak Won and Snap and AppImage Didn't. - Cameron Knauff
1·2 months agoYou CAN do those, but essentially 100% of apps that regular people are gonna want will be: click mac download -> open file -> follow prompts. That’s the point of a standard, which is not to necessarily eliminate alternatives, rather to make a single one be the default for almost 100% of standard situations.

Linux@programming.dev•Why Flatpak Won and Snap and AppImage Didn't. - Cameron Knauff
81·2 months agoThis completely. Speaking as a person who’s more tech skilled than 99% of non-programmers, i can tell you that installing apps is the main tech hurdle for Linux getting mainstream adoption.
There are non-tech hurdles too, but of the actual technology being easy to use then app installation is really the only aspect left that regular people can’t do without a huge dive of tech learning that’s beyond what most people can do.
-
Installing on mac: click the Mac download button and follow the prompts.
-
Installing on Windows: click the Windows download button and follow the prompts.
-
Installing on Linux: there’s no Linux download button, there’s a couple of buttons that say words you’ve never heard of before. They look kinda like buttons to download an app. You click one and try to open it, but it just shows an error, etc etc etc

Yeah as soon as you try to get to the advanced level of any task then mobile sputters out.
I’m making a personal spreadsheet on my phone, and as soon as i want to do anything even slightly advanced it turns out that that feature either doesn’t exist in the app or is extremely undiscoverable.
Similarly for video and audio editing, you can really do a lot of it on mobile, but as soon as you want to do advanced things then the features either don’t exist or are much slower and harder to accomplish on mobile

Linux@programming.dev•TIL: There is an open source "Alexa replacement" project
34·6 months agoIt isn’t listed anywhere on their homepage or example demos or anywhere listing its capabilities, so i did a web search to find it and I found that it sorta just kinda can do Spotify, but (1.) that isn’t listed anywhere on the home assistant abilities listing pages, which shows just how not ready for the mass market it is, and (2.) takes a ridiculous amount of very techie setup just to get it to work
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/spotify/
And also, out of the box can i ask it to:
-
tell me the weather?
-
set a timer?
-
set an alarm?
I don’t see anything on the website that says it can do these things. And even if it can (which doesn’t appear to be the case from their website) then the fact that the website doesn’t say it can do these things is a problem in itself that shows it isn’t ready for the mass market
Just look at the webpage for Alexa vs. Home Assistant and it’s clear that Alexa has a very wide variety of abilities and is designed to be easy to use by anyone, while the home assistant website only shows it doing smart device automation and looks like it’s not for regular folks
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DCCNHWV5
https://www.home-assistant.io/
I would LOVE to replace my Alexa devices with a local FOSS system, but unfortunately home assistant isn’t close to being able to do that yet

Linux@programming.dev•TIL: There is an open source "Alexa replacement" project
25·6 months agoNo, home assistant very much is not ready to replace an Alexa device. Home assistant mainly only does automation of smart devices, and as far as i can see from their website it does nothing else. One of the main things people use Alexa for is to play music from services like Spotify, and home assistant doesn’t appear to do that.
