Build her a server, install it at her house, set up some sort of automated DVD ripping mechanism so that she can digitize her own collection, wait for the inevitable tech support call, then go spend a Sunday afternoon fixing her server and digitizing her collection for her while she makes you dinner. You get to call it “quality time”, and you get fed while keeping her happy and her collection as far away from yours as possible. Win/win, everyone is happy.

I never disputed it. I said I don’t care. They can pronounce it however they want. In regular conversation with people around me, I’ll call it whatever I want.

I live in a place where people call things whatever they want to call things, and when enough people call that thing by that pronunciation for long enough than it becomes the default pronunciation. Which is exactly the same as where you live.

IKEA in North America pronounces it I-Key-Ah in their commercials. That’s directly from the company itself. If they are OK with accepting the different pronunciation of their own name, then why am I expected to say it the European way? That goes for Suse and Asus as well, since they’ve been called Soos and Ace-sus for years before they decided to “correct” everyone.

Non-Anglophone countries are free to exist and are free to pronounce things however they want. I would be looked at as if I had two heads if I pronounced those things like those non-Anglophone countries. It’s about not wanting to be treated like I’m a idiot just for pronouncing things the “proper” way.

I don’t care. It’s Soos. It’s Ace-SUS, not Ah-soos. It’s I-Key-Ah, not E-Kay-Ah. These are the way everyone around me says these things for as long as I can remember.

I learned a long time ago that the manufacturer doesn’t matter much on the long run. They all have a bad model occasionally. I have 500GB Seagate drives that still work, and some 1TB drives that died within a year. I’ve had good luck with recent WD Red 4TB drives, but my 2TB Green drives have all died on me. I had a some of the Hitachi Deskstar drives that worked perfectly for years when no one would touch them because of a bad production run. I currently have a Toshiba 8TB that I had never heard of before, but seems to be rock solid for the last year.

Pick a size that you want, look at what’s available, and research the reasonably priced ones to see if anyone is complaining about them. Review sites can be useful, but raw complaints in user forums will give you a better idea of which ones to avoid.

While that may be true, this is still likely an automated response built by a script that found some keywords on your profile. I still get the occasional proposition for RPG work, and I haven’t touched an AS/400 in over a 20 years which my profile reflects. I haven’t even touched my profile in years. My case in point. That wasn’t an ad hominem, that was genuine advice. You admitted yourself that people find you arrogant. If this is affecting your life, you should consider talking to someone about it. Especially since you just accused me of something, and then immediately did the exact thing you accused me of doing. This isn’t a competition, this is genuine advice. Please consider it.

That’s a direct example of him acting like the smartest man in the room, and letting you know, straight from the link that was provided. He’s most likely right, but there are ways of stating that diplomatically. That’s not matter-of-fact, that’s just being arrogant. If you can’t see that, and you also find that people consider you arrogant, maybe you should consider talking to a professional about that.

For a guy like that, it was never about money. He knew that would come in comfortable enough amounts. For him, it was about being the smartest person in the room. And 90% of the time, he is. And he lets you know.
