I am new to Wayland, but on asahi it is mandatory. So I am having to get used to it. Which is more noticeable as I had to change from i3 to sway. They are functionally identical but different in how you configure it with the wayland compositor.
Keep in mind that asahi cut out X11 support and went straight for wayland. It can support xwayland, just know that some things may or may not play nicely if the software doesn’t support wayland. As Wayland is the future of compositors, most popular Linux software should support it eventually.
Linux on arm is good, however as it is not nearly as popular in the desktop space as x86, common binaries for certain applications may not exist on arm if it closed source. You may or may not need those, you can make that judgement call.
Battery life is better than I expected but still not nearly as good as Macos. At least until they can come up with a proper solution for low power usage. Which currently a logistical problem of making something Linux kernel upstream compatible instead of applying a functional dirty solution now.
Linux on M1 is noticeably snappier than anything else I have ever used. It has a great future ahead of it. If your workloads don’t rely on heavy gpu usage and all your software can be found or compiled there. It is a pleasant experience. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I think some of the other users talked about the common things well enough.
Also yes, dual booting is currently the only supported option. They still need macos for firmware upgrades.
If this guy thinks he can make a better a wheel, I see no reason not to let him try. You never know, there could be a better way that becomes the new standard.
I am a big fan of this not. The worst thing about tech is all the bloody acronyms.
There is nothing in this audio recording that I find particularly concerning other than James’ comment. It sounds just like a standard meeting that I would have had during a morning brief. Knowing the context of James’ comment was directed at Linus, who is a close friend, probably smirked and kept on going.
When you add the context of sexual harassment, it doesn’t look good and is an inappropriately timed joke. However, nothing about the meeting indicates that it was about sexual harassment in particular from listening to the audio. If I missed it, please inform me.
Maybe it is because I heard these types of conversations frequently, it doesn’t seem like a big deal. They even say you can contact a manager, Linus or Yvonne, or the anonymous hotline. So people have options if they have a problem in particular with leadership.
I am not dismissing that sexual harassment may have taken place, but from the context from the audio given, it doesn’t appear anyone speaking knows about it.
Not to be that guy, but in relation to being anti union, he specifically has said that if his employees feel like they needed a Union, then he has failed as a boss. In the sense that it should never get to the point where wanting a Union should come up as LMG should be a good enough work place to where it would be unnecessary to have.
There is a difference. I would want my employees to be happy and compesated enough to where needing a Union is just completely unneeded.
Billet Labs made a post on reddit and in that post had a comment update saying this. They mentioned they already had started making a new prototype as they can’t guarantee that it would still be in usable condition as well as some other reasons.
I guess we will find out soon enough. LTT is currently being scrutinized with a fine tooth comb.
Billet Labs decided that they don’t want it back and just want the compensation instead. They started to make a new prototype as it is likely faster than them getting back the original if at all. Can’t say I blame them.
Yet there will still be people that will want the best of the best cooling regardless of how overpriced it is. As ridiculous as it is, he should have given it a fair chance.
LTT prides itself on reliability of testing and so when they aren’t willing to go the extra mile to do it correctly, it upsets people. No matter how ridiculous the product is.
Products that are obviously scams or ewaste don’t need the full testing treatment, but this is a real product that has a real use for those that have desire for it.
Ultimately it hurts a small company’s reputation when they didn’t deserve it.
Oh I am sure we will see a proper review by an eager reviewer soon. The chance to capitalize on the drama is far too enticing.
If you are using Scale, it has been depreciated. Rather inconvenient for me as I have to come up with a new solution.
I guess we will find out for sure soon. Something like this isn’t going to go silently.
As much as I think they need to get their shit together in other areas. I don’t believe they will themselves be biased by sponsors. They have repeatedly ragged on their own sponsors or quit using them if they turn out bad. Like Anker with the eufy camera debacle or there recent review where they rate their sponsors.
Linus has his problems certainly. Hubris being the worst. However, bias towards sponsors is one I personally don’t believe.
Linus’ does have the best intentions and usually does his best to try to meet them in my opinion. However, you have to know that ahead of time. That doesn’t mean anything to most people who aren’t familiar with how he roles. Which is not good if you are trying to be a reliable source of information for anyone to randomly go to.
I know I basically repeated what you said, but I don’t have a good answer for what they should be doing.
The biggest fault that was committed is that Linus didn’t just take the L and admit they fucked up and they would fix the problem instead of doubling down. Blaming GN for not telling him about it personally is not how journalism is supposed to work. Friend or not.

But why? What does he gain from shitting on his colleague if it isn’t necessary? GN gains more from being friendly with LTT as they have more connections.
LTT is trying to be reliable, but they aren’t giving themselves the time to do it. Mistakes are made and aren’t corrected or aren’t corrected in the best way.
As soon as they came out with scale, I knew core was going to be cut off when scale got good enough. There are just more possibilities with what you can do with Linux. The extra community support can not be understated as valuable to a profit driven company. At the end of the day, they gotta eat too and having one base system instead of two is the way they need to do it. The features are growing much faster on scale than they ever were on core in my opinion.
