  • I’m curious how long does your phone battery last these days?

It used to be that my early smartphones from years back would barely last a day and I’d be looking for a charger all the time. With my latest phone, on a reasonably heavy use day, I can go to bed with about 50 to 55% battery left. And last night, I barely used my phone at all and went to bed with like 65 to 70% battery left. And to be clear, it wasn’t sitting on a charger all day either. I got up, went to work and at the end of the night was left either enough battery to last be the entire weekend if I had continued the low usage.

Battery tech, and CPU and screen efficiency has advanced enough to where getting 2 days is not uncommon and I don’t care if it takes a couple of hours to recharge it at night. I also think much of the initial excitement of having a smartphone has died down so I’m not on it 24/7. Also having a tablet to offload some usage time helps as well.

So ultimately super fast chargers seem almost useless to me for most situations if they degrade the battery at all.

  • It speaks volumes to how terrible most modern automotive journalism is these days that a tech channel like LTT is making far more compelling automotive content.

In this video, they hit the nail on the head with the problem with most modern cars regardless of if they are ICE or EV. They are boring and have capabilities that you simply cannot extract on public roads. They are too fast, too powerful and loaded with way too many electronics.

    And then there’s the price!

Maybe for Linus, money doesn’t matter, but they at least acknowledge that costs for modern cars is ridiculous. I’ve unsubscribed to a few automotive channels lately because those hosts just can’t produce videos anymore that regular folks like me can relate to. I got sick and tired in hearing Doug Demuro talking down about everything but the top model of a car’s model range. He’s say stuff like “well the real car enthusiasts out there would just buy the _____ model” and he’d totally gloss over the fact that the top model might cost $10, 20, 50k more than the already expensive base price. Fuck off with your gatekeeping, but I ain’t dropping 6 figures on a car even if I had that money.

I’ve watched most of the car videos LTT has put out and I hope more is coming.

  • Yeah gadget makers were able to water proof Walkmans back in the 80s and these were devices with probably a dozen real physical buttons, a headphone jack and battery compartment, and hinged wide open to let a cassette tape inside. Waterproofing as well as durable buttons was something that was solved decades ago regardless of what Apple’s marketing bullshit has led people to believe.

I’m sure Apple is working on some new wireless standard called “magic connect” or some shit like that. It will be 13.8% better but make all previous devices obsolete and incompatible pushing people to trash their old stuff and buy some new overpriced, proprietary stuff.

Then when they introduce this new standard, their next presentation slide will pat themselves in the back because they are such a “green” company.

  • It’s still 45% marketshare Android vs 55% iOS. With the way the title reads, you’d think Android was down in the single digits and barely hanging on.

Personally I just don’t see how anyone uses iOS. The iPhone I have is just awful. The UI is clunky and I’m absolutely baffled why this stupid phone weighs so much. That’s not a good thing, damn it. My Samsung is infinitely better device in my opinion. But I’d still love to see a third player come in. I was sad when Microsoft killed off their phone OS. It might not have been great at the time, but more competition is always better. And then if course there’s also PalmOS. So sad to see such a cool OS die off.

  • This take makes absolutely no sense.

Since when are iPhone unreliable? And since when do iPhone have a short life due to planned obsolescence?

I have both a Galaxy S phone and an iPhone and I hate using the iPhone, but I’ll be the first to admit the iPhone is extremely well built and gives me zero worries about reliability. Also Apple is known for supporting its devices for years and years longer than Android phone makers, so I have no idea why anyone would claim anything about planned obsolescence. And again, I say that as someone who hates iOS. It’s so clunky and frustrating to use, but the hardware it runs on is absolutely top tier.

  • I miss my Motorola phones.

Had nothing but Motorolas since my very first Android. Absolutely loved the gestures and hands free interaction. Went through a series of Moto phones over the years until I accidentally destroyed my last one and needed a new device ASAP. Ended up with a Samsung S21 which is a perfectly fine phone, but it doesn’t have the personality of any of my old Motos. It does have a much better camera though than any of my Motorolas.

I don’t want to buy a new phone any time soon, but I definitely want to go back to Motorola.
