If it were me, I’d probably replace the switches if that’s an option. Isopropyl bath could work, but I doubt you’ll be able to fully remove the tar. It’s like that dust mixed with grease that kitchens sometimes get.

2·2 years agoThough the GMMK doesn’t tick all your boxes, it’s ease of maintenance (modular/hotswap, but no soldering), minimal software, and overall quality may make it something to look at. Only problem I have with it is that my scroll lock LED was DOA. But I never use scroll lock, so eh. Not terribly expensive either, and you get to choose your switches and keycaps. I went box jades and navies.

Unfortunately, my eReader doesn’t really support modern web browsers, so it can’t do news articles…

2·2 years agoNot sure! Does seem…oddly inefficient, though.
Wahots@pawb.socialtohomelab@lemmy.ml•Surely, one of you fine folks has a better solution to attach a spare fan to an ISP gateway without damaging it?
2·2 years agoYeah, mine has one and it runs, but infrequently and at such a slow RPM it does very little. Shucking it was the only thing that seemed to help!
They should have gone with one of these thicker 30mm (thick) fans. They move a lot more air than even a standard PC fan, but do it quietly.

Though one has to wonder why it needs cooling at all. I’ve never had an actively cooled network device before, and most of my equipment hasn’t even gotten more than marginally warm due to excellent venting.

2·2 years agoThey are all on the bottom, the rubber feet/stripping on mine started coming off, found it by mistake. One has a sticker, but those don’t really hold up to void warranties anyways. Plus, I’m just gonna super glue the rubber feet back on after, hahah. I just tucked the screws and the chassis in the back of a closet for now. No tabs or anything to break when uninstalling it, either!
Edit: yeah, all in one! Mine is one of those modem / wifi combos. I set it to bridge mode so I could use my own router, and the thing still overheated even though it was just acting as a modem, smh. Annoying how bad it is. Luckily, shucking it will clear up 9/10 problems. Put some tape over the LED if you sleep in the same room as it, it’s very bright when exposed.

4·2 years agoIt likes to drop me from the middle of games when my same unit overheats :)
Fuck Comcast and fuck the “Made with ❤️ in Philadelphia” team that designed this complete POS. It has a built in cooling fan (lmao) and still overheats! It’s a mostly empty modem that is almost the size of a shoebox, lol. It gets so hot that the adhesive on the bottom starts coming off.
Wahots@pawb.socialtohomelab@lemmy.ml•Surely, one of you fine folks has a better solution to attach a spare fan to an ISP gateway without damaging it?
14·2 years agoHey! You have the same shitty AIO that Comcast sent me! It overheated and tries to melt itself down all the time. Luckily it gets so hot that the adhesive melted and the screws were easily visible. I just took the chassis off and it mostly doesn’t overheat anymore.

Crazy, the thing is basically hollow and was right next to the window and would still overheat. The bottom doesn’t allow for any air intake so it sufffocates. Also it’s 80% plastic because they couldn’t be assed to add aluminum heatsinks.

Android@lemdro.id•Why is text selection such a broken mess on so many websites? Why does this have to be such a hassle??English
3·2 years agoThis, and also putting the cursor into a wall of text, such as between two closed parentheses () in the middle of a block of text. It’s always off by 1-4 characters. I KNOW it’s fixable because WindowsPhone fixed this in the 2015 era with a six-way keyboard nipple embedded in it’s keyboard. It never messed up. I miss it everyday…

Open Source@lemmy.ml•It's time to take advantage of Reddit's decline
4·2 years agoThank you! I’ve been looking :)
God, back in uni with free electricity and internet in the dorms, we managed to seed over a terabyte of data before IT got suspicious and turned off that port. Then we seeded over slower wifi until they turned the port back on next semester, haha. Good times.
That was where we learned that the pirated copies of stuff were easier to find, higher quality, and worked on hardware that websites declared “too old” to stream their content. It all started when we had a bunch of people over to watch a movie, and Amazon refused to play it on older hardware. It instantly converted half a dozen people to piracy, lol.

I’d try a bath as a last resort. You’d need the highest concentration isopropyl alcohol you could find, like 90%+. I’d also recommend removing any plastic parts and disassemble the metal backing. If things are soldered or glued together, I might not chance it, as moisture could stay trapped inside.
