  • I loved Inbox. I hate everything that was supposed to replace it. Spark isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it’s not nearly as smart. Shortwave may be ok but my only IOS device isn’t set up to receive email and I haven’t bothered to try it since the Android app is new. Gmail is terrible. Outlook is Outlook.

Inbox worked in a way that my brain immediately understood and adapted to.

  • I have the K10 Pro. The K series are great keyboards. Right now mine is mostly stock (red switches, and I changed out WASD even though I don’t really do computer gaming because it reminds me of my misspent youth) because every week I decide on a different switch and keycap combination. Last week I wanted black and purple with super loud clickity clacks. The week before I wanted something silent in light grey, dark grey, and red. Today I was thinking about getting vintage looking typewriter caps.

I think those keycaps look fantastic. Enjoy the new job and keyboard! Congrats on both!

  • They’ve been reinvented repeatedly. Citrix, terminal servers, thin clients, cloud desktops, web apps, remote app delivery…

Most people (not necessarily here) need a web browser and an office program. Most people are well suited to terminals or something like a Chromebook.

I need actual hardware for my job and hobbies, but even I have a mini PC set up like a gaming console so that if I want to play games on my bedroom TV I don’t have to hook up my Steam Deck or gaming laptop. I just stream them.

  • I have a Tailscale subnet router set up locally and added the remote IPs to my router. Tailscale on every device was a crapshoot as to whether it would route locally or through the VPN.

I asked support and they said it should be on every device. Could be something else on my network forcing it to act like that but I don’t have enough give-a-shit in me to troubleshoot it.

  • I think it’ll be a long time before that’s true for the layperson. I also think that it’ll be an even longer time before that’s true for the hobbiest. But I do agree it’s coming and that it’s crap. I think it’ll be like game consoles (or like Mac is now) where you pick your flavor, buy your system, and it’ll take a team of dedicated crackers to get us access to our own stuff.

  • People do not give a swimming fuck about which OS they’re using

Yep. I was an outlier and used to care. Now as long as it does what I want I really can’t give a shit. Due to the fact that it doesn’t come standard on many machines it’s an extra annoyance to set up. And you’d better do your homework to make sure what you bought is supported.

I have a whole life and a bunch of hobbies that are more interesting to me than religiously following which hardware might work, constantly tweaking flags, and running things in wine. It’s a fine hobby for those that love it but I don’t anymore. And most people never do.
