  • I think I actually fixed it?

i tried to do an os refresh but kept getting some generic error bc the backup partition wouldnt update?

after a bunch of fumbling around I actually slowed down and took a second to read the errors and saw an error for a game i had removed.

so after ducking around (intentional duckduckgo pun) i found the sudo apt purge command and zapped it

then i followed https://support.system76.com/articles/upgrade-pop/ and some things happened and downloaded and i rebooted

and its working now? I will know for sure if its working if doesn’t start happening again in an hour.

but i think it might be good to go based on that experience.

Edit: continues to work. Might be solid. Will report back tomorrow.

  • I switched for a few reason:

    • I didn’t like Windows advertising to me on my desktop.
    • Lemmy exposed me to a lot of options.
    • I felt like if I had any issues, the community would assist, and they did.

    Now that I have switched

    • Pop!_os feels like home.
    • Many of my games run BETTER on Linux.
    • I know I will not be a product.
    • I feel more secure
    • It has been fun learning something new
    • There are so many choices beyond iOS and Windows
    • I wish I switched sooner.

  • I think all operating system have their plusses and minuses.

I would suggest dual booting and trying out a distro before fully jumping ship.

There are a lot of distros to choose from, but installing Linux is a pretty easy task.

You’ll essentially just need to boot into BIOS and the boot from a USB that you’ve mounted an ISO on for the distro of your choice.

I am using Pop!_os and personally, I love it. It has a MacOS feel, but it’s not a locked in ecosystem.

You can use this site to get a feel for your options - Elementary OS is another that has a MacOS feel.

Once you land on a distro you want to try out - YouTube will be your friend, there are 1000 videos out there to show you how to set a up a dual boot.

Just make sure you back up ALL of your files before you start anything just to be safe.
