And seriously, with Lemmy being FILLED with “dae Linux?” and “communism good” posts and programming humor hitting my front page HOURLY, you’re honestly trying to tell me “the programmers and lefties don’t know about this place”? Seriously?!?!
And you think that the people who already saw entire subreddits shutdown in protest, with Lemmy plastered all over the place as an alternative, who decided to stay after all the content creators left, THOSE PEOPLE, are the ones you want to now court over?
Again, quality vs quantity.
We already gained the quality contributors from reddit. Advertising now is just drawing from the bottom of the barrel.
“are you sick of ads? Heres an ad!” Doesn’t have the same impact you think it does.
Also, food for thought: you really want to invite the kind of people who can’t use adblockers here? Barriers to entry aren’t necessarily a bad thing. You want quality, not quantity. More people isn’t necessarily better. And the people who stuck by reddit and spez through all of that?
Some dude was ranting somewhere recently about GitHub and “I just want the damn exe, not a bunch of stupid code”. It became a bit of a meme.
Ever hear a completely accurate and factual joke? They’re boring. Just admit you don’t like the joke and move on. You don’t need to further the very stereotype you hate so much.
That’s the irony part that you’re just not getting.
It’s more like “Hey, don’t Arch users totally fit this stereotype?”, but again, look how defensive you get. It’s hilarious that you don’t see the irony. The joke literally starts with “Arch users…”, but you zero in on the vegan part. You didn’t even need to comment. You could’ve just downvoted and moved on.

Kinda proving the point tho. The joke was more on Arch users and everyone in here is writing paragraphs defending Gluten Free/Vegan. But, like the meme is pointing out, you just gotta talk about it! 😂
In another posting of this, it was pointed out that this is just a game of telephone that started with someone saying “I dunno, maybe they used electric toothbrushes?!?” basically. There’s no concrete evidence of this actually occuring and is just being reposted over and over as fact now that it’s been picked up by bigger sources and now those sources are being pointed to as proof.
I forget the name of it, but it’s when the original source is lost and all current sources are just an oroboros consuming itself. You have the original, shakey source, its picked up by a reputable source, then everyone starts sharing that as the source, giving the story credibility. Eventually everyone is just referencing a copy of a copy(sometimes with one of the copies even being credited as the OG source).
Most outrage media is this. One person said something on social media, it gets repeated by a source that “matters”, and eventually it is “fact” with “thousands of supporters”. The Starbucks Holiday drama is usually just a handful of people on Twitter being spread around, for example.
EDIT: FOUND IT. Was an old XKCD comic. “Citogenesis”. When people don’t pay attention to the original citation anymore because it’s been replaced by “better” citations that validate it in a weird catch-22 way.
I found asking it to answer in an acrostic poem defeated everything. Ask for “information” to stay vague and an acrostic answer. Solved it all lol.
Awards encourage farming for them. It’s human nature. And you attached actual money to them(the donations). So it has real value.
I don’t care how you distribute it. It’s a bad idea. It’s a terrible feature of reddit that should have never existed in the first place. If Lemmy added this, I’d leave in a heartbeat.

Nope. No highlighting karma, and especially not karma actually worth something. That just asks for people who only care to game the system to start flooding the network. Your noise to signal ratio will plummet. And how will you handle it per instance? What’s to stop someone from spinning up an instance of bots and auto voting on all of their stuff?
A million times no.
And if your friend isn’t convinced by you and somehow missed the months long protest, destruction of third party apps, and mass exodus, honestly they should stay in reddit. We don’t need another Facebook.
Plus, have you considered that Lemmy isnt singularly owned? You literally can’t say ANY of what you want to say in your ads. “We don’t have ads”. Really? You can assure me that no single instance has ads? Which instance are you even going to link to? Your own? What makes that one special? What happens when you advertise for “Lemmy” and people find the intolerant instances and assume that’s all of the fediverse? What about other offshoots like kbin and mastodon? Not gonna advertise for them? And why should I trust you with money in the first place? For all I know it’s just a scam to collect money and run. What happens when someone else pops up claiming that their donation campaign is the real one and yours is fake? Literally anyone can spin up an instance and claim to be “doing it for Lemmy!”
