Linux@programming.dev•Only for reading, easily available in EU, low budget: which e-ink device/distro?
2·5 months agoi think many vendors couple it to their DRM ridden online stores that sell you “epub” files that aren’t thst and that don’t work outside that device

6·5 months agoah no, sorry. it’s a Kobo Touch. very cheap when bought second hand. and together with the right cough subsription over at anna’s archive almost free 🤭
the screen eventually broke. was able to replace the screen with just a the right screwdriver (and the correct replacement part).

Programming@programming.dev•I'm getting started with functional programming, which language would you recommend?
3·6 months agoGNU Guile or Racket. from the language side every scheme is a scheme though. it kinda depends what you want to do with it
SICP is great for a very general in-depth intro
it’s as simple as
(command argument0 argument1 argument2)meaning arguments 0, 1 and 2 are applied to
command. when an expression is evaluated it dissolves into a value according to its context.(+ 1 2 3) ; evaluates to 6 in a context where + actually means an addition or sum operation (* 2 (+ 4 3)) ; evaluates to 14 (i think)the absolute killer feature is the elimination of idiotic, man-made madness excused with the term “operator precedence”

it takes quite a big bunch of time to craft anything even remotely useful - the golden era of extreme java programming has long passed
nevertheless, i still want to cheer for you and the achievement! 🥳
that we (or rather: you) are about to solve the bootstrapping problem for the rust toolchain and we get closer to a GCC frontend for the rust language
