  • I’m assuming we’re just talking about metal albums, given the community.

    Here’s my top 3:

    1. Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale

    2. Draconian - Under a Godless Veil

    3. Swallow the Sun - When a Shadow is Forced into the Light

Doom and related genres have always been my fave when it comes to metal, but I used to also listen to a lot of thrash and power metal. These days it’s pretty much all stuff that is doom or goth-ish.

  • I use them instead of virtual desktops - each with a specific hotkey, and some with customized pinned apps.

    I have …

    General: Email, shopping, etc.

    Gaming

    Media

Two Work activities - a primary, and a secondary for when I need to compartmentalize different ongoing tasks

Other - for anything transitory that doesn’t fit in the others.

I realize this could largely be done with virtual desktops, though I don’t think you can have a different pinned app loadout for each?

The downside to setting things up this way is when I restart my computer, it seems to randomly decide which browser windows go in each activity. Also, with apps that I use across them (like Notion), I have to go hunting for which activity it opened in. To get around the issue of splitting Firefox across different profiles, I just use two browsers. Firefox for work, and Firedragon for personal stuff. They share the same external password manager, so it’s pretty seamless.

  • I actually very recently tried it. I’m sure it’s great but something about the UI or maybe general paradigm switch versus apps like Notion really confused me. It looks great though, so I’m sure I’ll give it another go sometime when I have a bit more time to really learn it. Nonetheless, I appreciate the recommendation!

  • Yup! Where possible I try to get everything in x265 for this reason. It takes a little more processing power to transpose, but the difference in file size is worth it.

I’ve heard you’ll take a quality hit to re-encode something from x264 to x265, however. If you care about that, it’s better to just find a new source recorded with x265 or AV1 (if all your devices can run it).

I’m not very knowledgeable in that end of things, though, so I could be wrong.

Edit: Fixed AVC where I had meant AV1

  • If I remember correctly ZFS keeps the whole array running whenever one is active (which is basically always). If I remember, I’ll check my UPS when I get home to see the actual power draw. The storage itself is probably cheaper to run than the main server in the rack - a gen8 HP 360p, which is a bit on the old side and I’d guess not terribly efficient being a 1U piece with many small high-powered fans running constantly.

Electricity here isn’t too expensive though, being public hydro power.
