Glad to see updates to screenshots. It’s a killer feature that keeps me on Firefox along with Containers.
Internet rando.

Yeah they acquired it a while ago.
✅ am lazy
✅ am couch potato
Felt like a great fit.
It’s been my username for 10 years online and I plan on sticking with it. I do go by LCP nowadays though as it’s shorter.
I own my device. I get to choose what I install on it.
Google Chrome isn’t on the Microsoft Store on Windows or macOS Store on macOS. Should I stop “sideloading” it according to his advice?
Edit: Found more about the quote on The Verge: https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/14/23960811/pichai-we-dont-want-to-allow-you-to-completely-compromise-your-phone
“We’re trying to strike a balance. Apple’s iPhone only allows the App Store, but we believe in choice, so on Android we allow you to sideload and install additional applications.”
I’m so conflicted about it. I don’t want people to have to suffer for intentionally or unintentionally installing garbage on their phones, but I can’t let that take away from how I use my device as well.
I don’t know what opinion to form. The openness of Android is constantly abused, but Google seems to be overcorrecting by locking it down more than iOS in certain cases and reducing choices for users to use/customize their device as they like. I can’t backup my damn Minecraft worlds without paying Microsoft $4/month for a server to act as an intermediary, or I have to download an unvetted third-party Minecraft addon. On iOS, the “walled garden”, you can use the Files app or connect to your computer and backup.
Would decoupling Android from Google help Android’s long-term future? Let some non-profit organization with different goals take over? With that said, it’ll be a big challenge for them to figure out licensing, funding, development, etc.
I’m on a Pixel 6a running Android 14. Material You has grown on me. I still dislike gesture navigation. Would love to see more lockscreen customization.
Lol, there’s a non-zero chance that Google cancels the Pixel series.
He reviewed a second Polar H10 strap, which is why it was on the chart. https://youtu.be/6F_RccP7Ec0
It does seem to have been removed from newer videos. It’s not in the Apple Watch Series 9 review.
Regarding the accuracy of the Polar H10 strap itself: https://youtu.be/YGMZNF7Lnmo
Regarding comparing with actual scientific tests: https://youtu.be/7m_oBiYk8Rk he only does it for devices with significance, it seems.
It’s not a perfect series of tests since the subject is only him, but he’s clear about it and it’s above and beyond what regular tech reviewers do, who gloss over spec sheets.
These are the kinds of reviews I personally value.
I keep mine off except when driving or when I want GPS-tagged photos. Saves me a bit of battery life.
My phone is always with me in my pocket so I don’t feel the need to track its location using “Find My”. And to be honest, no one is going to find stealing a Pixel 6a enticing…
7 years of OS support! That’s the kind of stuff I like to hear.
Very happy to see their partnership with iFixit, and to see repairability actually be taken seriously.
Good to see minor battery life improvements to the Pixel Watch 2. Hopefully that upgraded heart rate sensor is actually accurate.
Pixel Watch was embarrassingly bad in health tracking compared to the Apple Watch SE. It’s cheaper to get an Apple Watch SE + (discounted) iPhone than just a Pixel Watch.
And please get rid of the Fitbit subscription, Google.
The reduction in features/openness is definitely noticed each update…

I’m glad to hear that the experience was relatively smooth for you.
I don’t mean to imply that average computer users are dumb. It’s just that your positive experience came thanks to the numerous improvements made over the years, and I just feel like there’s still a bit of ways to go.
The Linux thing I don’t find egregious. Replace Linus with a sizeable majority of the population and they would have done the same thing. I probably would have as well.
If you want to move people from Windows to Linux, Discord to Matrix, Whatsapp to Signal or even Reddit to Lemmy, it needs to be as painless as possible.
Everything that GN points out though is pretty damning.
I like the way it looks, though I never felt anything wrong with the current app to begin with.
Like @psychic717@lemmy.world mentioned, hopefully there’s a dark mode.
Additionally, apparently the Android app does not show your step streak while the iOS app does. I don’t see it in the screenshots in the article, but I hope it’s something they’ve addressed.
Can’t wait!
