I find dockerization tends to make things waaaay easier to bring up/take down with simple yet consistent configuration schemes. I distribute all my self hosted stuff across a small cluster of machines- if I want to move a service from one to another it’s as easy as moving the config folder and the docker-compose. Don’t need to have startup scripts, or remembering installation steps after a fresh install, or worry about python/package versions. Plus it helps keep track of what services are set up, soni don’t have to worry about leaving anything unused but still installed and running. And updating is as easy as pulling the images and recreating the containers.

As I understand, an adtech company bought a majority stake in StartPage in 2019, and though they apparently can’t use that stake to force privacy-threatening changes, I personally find that acquisition disconcerting. Probably not enough to say it’s unsafe to use, but enough that I prefer some of the other options out there.

I hear my peers praise it for its alleged ability to perfect tailor playlists and recommendations for music discovery- because I guess we can’t be bothered to figure out what music we like anymore. I mean, I don’t disagree entirely. Once a proper foss smartphone is available and viable for daily use, I fully intend to use it because graphene does have a lot of google dependencies that I consider shortcomings. But if the goal is degoogling, navigation apps from non-google stores is not a particularly high bar to clear at the moment.

I use Grapheneos, though I’m not opposed to suggesting stuff from the play store where foss options don’t cut it. I just personally don’t feel like they make much sense in a post in a degoogling community

This is about as politically agnostic as it gets. I don’t care for some of the eurocentrism I’ve seen in the ongoing conversation, but it arises from concerns that other western countries are experiencing following their reliance on the increasingly-unstable american empire.

My condolences for being stuck with Verizon. Learned the hard way that any phone originally from their network can’t have its bootloader unlocked, even if the manufacturer otherwise supports it.
