Great to hear! I’ve perservered despite this as it’s great for me in all other respects.
My main prob with viewtube has been its flakey resolution auto or manual selection. The UI with it is weird and i basicially have to randomly click unclick autoselect , and switch between resolutions before it somehow lands on 1080 . Might be my browser and OS combo - macOS librewolf. Hosted on kde locally. Otherwise love it. But I dont use much other than search and watch. I use metube if I want to keep anything.
Yeh its not exactly doing that for me. Just very flakey with manual selection of resolutions. My bandwidth is not a good test for the autoselection right now unfortunately. Need to test with and without DASH. Very promising though. Ive kind of given up on public invidious instances or similar so might be time to selfhost something like this.
I hadn’t seen this frontend before. Its nice. Yeh quality selection does seem a bit buggy for me also (librefox). I see under the user settings (click account top right), there are some settings for default quality and mpeg-dash. I havent tested myself but just spotted them. Maybe try these ?
Edit: i skipped your mention of “installed “ viewtube. We may not even be looking at the same thing lol. Im looking at viewtube.io . Perhaps the same if youre selfhosting anyway.
Wow. Thanks for the link. Makes me wonder if the whole thing could be seen as a honeypot opportunity for lawyers of evil corps and others. Also makes me wonder what their business end game is - get acquired by Amazon or another streaming giant ? In which case, yikes again. I was suspicious enough with the mere fact it was a hybrid streaming, live tv, and self host media solution. Conflicts of interest. A Shame. Theres alot of good aspects to using it. Hello Jellyfin.
Is this via social / account stuff within the plex ecosphere ? Ive never used any of that (wittingly) including seperate user accounts in my household. Is it between such accounts you’re referring to, or more insidious than that ? Ive been plexing for some years but always have one eye on jellyfin. If theyre doing anything dodgy with data I will jump. Need to have another look at their policies and settings - its been a while. Good to have a headsup.
I wonder to what extent this will help, in the case of YouTube? Its so dominant of that market. Is it purely fiscal or also technical?
My 2019 mbp is my work daily driver doing fairly heavy design , video, and blender work no problem. Runs well. Probably gets 6-10 hours a day of use. Video rendering a little slow but not egregiously so. It was upgraded to the max though. Its late 2019 intel. Not sure if its on latest OS but shouldn’t be too far behind.
