Another one bytes the dust. Vex is a YouTube (gaming oriented) tech channel with over 200k subscribers. He just switched and started his journey to Linux. It’s a 46 minutes video, so there is lot of coverage. I think its always interesting to see of someone switching to Linux and documenting it in public, especially someone with lots of followers (OK its not a PewDiePie… but still).

I’ve had this Windows laptop, the Zephyrus G16. It is fast, has a beautiful display, lightweight, well-built… but it runs Windows 11. That has always been nagging me that it is holding it back, and I have only heard amazing things about Linux for the efficiency and customizability. So let’s see what it can actually do.

0:00- Windows
2:27- why stay?
5:49- THE DISTRO
7:32- installing Linux
11:20- onboarding
16:29- attempting a game + Davinci Resolve
20:45- idle power consumption
21:53- window management is incredible
24:12- fixing the brightness
24:52- Davinci Resolve... STUDIO
27:13- choppy audio
27:52- webcam is ugly
28:31- adding 120Hz!
29:24- DLSS Upgrades
30:17- boot times have been BAD
30:37- GPU switching sucks
31:12- it keeps freezing
32:02- modding a game
32:25- playing a WINDOWS game, but not in Steam
32:57- My Pros
34:34- my downsides
36:30- GAMING vs WINDOWS
41:37- creative apps...
42:33- my experience
44:09- am I keeping it though???

While it was wrong move, it is a legit option. Such streams just displays what many people actually do, especially those not very technically versed. So I see more of an exposure of many, than a single personal mistake here, because this is not an issue in isolation. And its good that we see this on display, because we talk and point to it and others learn why that needs to be done. I’m not defending his mistake, just talk more broadly about the issue.

We have seen ignoring warnings from other channels too… its more common than people think. I think people ignore this, because everything is overwhelming when new to Linux. They learn so much, experiment so much, its just like in Tokyo all lights blend you and then you just click off… ok… at this point I maybe defended his mistake. :D Goddammit I’m too optimistic!

Oh yea, it’s the classic linux ethos where linux lets you shoot yourself in the foot. In fact in this instance it’s even the highlighted option. You can tell he didn’t even read the popup, he just auto clicked the button with muscle memory. This one is kinda on Valve though, they should make that option less appealing in my opinion. or even better have an option that will auto-precompile the shaders as part of the download process. So when the user sees the big green play button it starts playing the game.
