3 years ago NCIX had public auction to get rid of the last of the inventory and other items. NCIX was a Canadian electronics retailer, and Linus’s former employer where he worked as the purchasing agent, and was the face of there youtube channel. There youtube channel was pretty much a proto-LinusTechTips. One of the main items Linus went to the auction to purchase was the play button from that channel.
as it goes in to in the message you linked, and Linus’s response he didn’t win the bidding, but while still there found out the young man and his father did, and tried to talk them in to selling him the button for what they paid, after explaining why the button was so important to him. The Son agreed but after hearing why the Son wanted it Linus told him to keep it.
after the video went up, the Son caught some flack and bullying from certain members of the LTT fan base that a few days later Linus called out. but I appears the situation scared the Son away from continuing to be a content creator.
Is there a video, stream, forum post showing that Linus encouraged his fan base? Or proof that he discouraged them from continuing the harrassment? Fans get rabid. Comes with the territory. I would not neccessarily blame their actions on the content creator unless they were shown to have encouraged or knew the situation and not adequately discouraged the behavior
He did adress it in a WAN show (here) at the ~10 minute mark, but he’s still responsible for the original video. Besides, only a fraction of his viewers watch the WAN show, anything he says there will remain unseen by most.
Ok. Yeah, I think this follows the pattern that NG pointed out of the team not properly making corrections/edits to their videos when needed. Pointing it out on this separate smaller platform is equivalent to secretly updating the original video with corrections after millions of viewers have already viewed it and are for sure not going to come back and rewatch just in case it changed. This shitty behavior was already happening back in 2018 except the subject is much more egregious than wrong testing results or specs for hardware.
Every person with a larger online following is absolutely partly responsible to their fans behavior when it happens en masse. Especially if your audience is partly kids. They look up to you and you profit from them consuming your content so it’s your moral responsibility to direct them in the right direction.
That’s why I’m asking if he put out a message strongly discouraging this behavior. And, no, ultimately, you have no control of what those fans do in your name. Your responsibility ends if you make a good faith effort to call those fans out for and show strongly that you are not supporting their behavior
