Whenever I hear someone talking about something that “goes hard”, my instinctive mental comparison is the opening track of this absolute fucking masterpiece of a record.

There are literally no weak tracks on this record. This was the first record I ever listened to, as a young punk, that made me look up the session players. I have been a Matt Chamberlain fan ever since.

    Love her music…

But the title of the album was

When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight And he’ll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring There’s no body to batter when your mind is your might So when you go solo, you hold your own hand And remember that depth is the greatest of heights And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land And if you fall it won’t matter, cuz you’ll know that you’re right

When did they shorten it to just the first three words? I know it was always abbreviated as “when the pawn” but I always thought the album itself had the full title on it?

I get designing a different cover artwork. Removing like 95% of the title seems an odd choice though.

I did include the full poem in my alt text. I was also sad that the vinyl release didn’t have the same wrap that I remember my CD coming with, which had the whole thing printed on a translucent red sleeve.

No worries mate… I’m on Jerboa that doesn’t really display the alt text, at least not in a way that is enough on the nose for me to just see it somewhere ;). I dig the album and really like the minimalism of the vinyl cover… just never saw it before, so I thought it just stood out how the title seems a bit shorter here.

This alternative cover is from the album’s first (i think only) LP release, printed by Vinyl Me, Please! around 2020. VMP did all of Fiona Apple’s stuff a while ago. No idea why they chose to change this artwork specifically when their Extraordinary Machine covers are just a pixelated upscale of the CD artwork. I’ve always assumed it was licensing rights

I’ve gotten a few Music On Vinyl records that really did a poor job on the album art, just like you describe.
