EDIT: Thanks everyone for the awesome support! I left Reddit for Lemmy a few days ago and I’m already glad I made the switch! 🤗
Yo yo!
I’ve been working on making my life more private and need some assistance picking suitable replacement options. Please let me know what you think of my list of if there are any opportunities for improvement! Here’s where I’m at …
Apple Maps -OSMandMaps. Seems like a good option, but it’s not ready out the box. I need to do more tweaking with it. -Magic Earth. Haven’t tested it yet, seems good. But I’m looking for free options first before I dabble with paid stuff.
AI (ChatGPT) -Lumo. Chat is really good. But I understand they are good because they syphon data illegally, so I’m ok “downgrading” when switching AIs. Lump seems pretty good so far. I can tell it’s not as advanced but it will do me fine for what I need. Also, i assume once I pay for lumo pro it will be more “powerful”. -Maple AI. Seems dope, also I like the pay model, pay for what you use over “x” amount of inquiries. Does anyone know how I owledgable/powerful it is? -local AI OR Ollama. These 2 are beyond my knowledge. I don’t understand how I run these on my own server? If you know anything about these please ELI5.
Google Docs -OnlyOffice. Seems like it does everything I want. -cryptpad. Just heard of this today, need to explore more. Seems dope, but it doesn’t have an app? From what I’ve seen definitely a strong contender.
Photo App (I haven’t looked into any of these yet) -Protón Drive. -ente photos. -I’mmich.
Google Drive -protón drive.
Regarding photo apps, there is also zeitkapsl.eu Disclaimer: I run and created this app.
We don’t have all the fancy AI features of ente.io (yet), but face detection/grouping is soon to be released. But a key advantage is fully native android and iOS apps. No cross platform fuzz.
Also, we don’t offer a free-tier but the cheapest package starts at 2€/month and you can test everything for free for 30 days.
Would love your thoughts on that.
Heck ya! I’ll add it to my list and check it out!
Thanks!
For maps, I’ve been Happy with comaps. You will want to learn how to deal with pins and shared locations.
Bet. I’ll check that one out, thanks! 🤙🏽
Map and navigation replacement: I used to use organic maps but changed to CoMaps.
I prefer CoMaps, you can download the individual maps, save them to your preferred location, and transfer them to other phones.
A family member uses Magic earth because they have E/os installed, and it is the default map and navigation app. they like it.
No ai for me sorry.

check this out
Thanks for the link! Very informative.
glad to be of help
Honestly man, I’ve tried osmand, magic earth, and a couple others but I keep going back to Waze and Google maps.
Say openstreetmaps is properly documented and everything, there is no real time traffic information or alerts about closures. OSM is good for hiking and biking but for things like driving, I don’t think it’s that great.
That being said, I do try to contribute from Street Complete to make it better
Ya, the lack of resl time driving data is a bummer. But if that’s something I have to give up for a bit more privacy i will definitely use it for drives where I don’t mind being late. But if magic earth or something else had the same level of privacy with real time traffic I may choose that one.
Please continue to use street complete. OSM is very good. And yeah, it lacks real time info, but that’s very expensive to make everywhere, so I do understand that it’s not a priority, for a free map. I use OSM and street complete too.
Consider using Nextcloud instead of Proton Drive.
You can host it yourself, but if you’re not up for that you can pay Hetzner to do it for you for dirt cheap
https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/
The issue I have with Proton is they seem really good now, but in say 10 years they could get greedy and then you have to move again.
With Nextcloud you own and control everything iit’s open source
I hear ya with the 10 years thing. But tbh, you could say that about any company that touts privacy.
I do love the self hosting thing. Another user mentioned that as well. Hetzner is a good back up. Do you have any links that help someone do it by themselves ?
True, but things have been getting iffy with Proton recently like their use of AI and lack of transparency. Plus it’s better to compartmentalize. Wouldn’t wanna put all your eggs in one basket and then have Proton turn to shit later on.
Running Open Source models locally will give you the same quality of results as using a website. The tradeoff is the speed.
To get a response from a 70B model can take 5 minutes. I stick to 5-15B which gets you speed you are used to.
That works perfectly fine for me as I typically just need code snippets or a fancier thesaurus.
You make running it sound ez! Ima newb when it comes to this stuff, would you be able to send me a video or blog explaining how I could set it up locally?
I found NetworkChuck’s reasonably beginner friendly.
OSM~ is great. The only tweaking you need to do, is download the relevant maps for you. If that’s too much for you, I guess you really need to ask yourself, if you want only easy, or you want private and free? Easy comes with a prize too… Personally I use OSM~ and since I took a few minutes to set it up, I have never looked back. I’ve tried Waze, Magic Earth, CoMaps and others… OSM~ is simply the best and most versatile.
AI - I don’t use it, and wouldn’t recommend it, so that I leave for other to answer.
LibreOffice is way better than OnlyOffice.
What is a Photo app? To take pictures, to edit pictures, to manage pictures?
I use Mega, NextCloud (self host), Protondrive and pCloud. To be fair - the best for me is pCloud. NextCloud is used for some minor private stuff. On Mega I have 50 GB, but I don’t pay, so they are starting to show ads - might cut them of totally soon.
Im enjoying the set up and tweaking of OSM. What I don’t like so far is the verbal directions. Sometimes the app will tell me to take a right/left when actually I should be going straight. But, to be fair, I haven’t played with it long enough to give it its fair shot.
I’ll look into libre. I was hoping for an app, but I can definitely make a browser work.
The photo app would be storage for photos. Someone else mentioned self hosting using AI. I imagine the process is similar for self hosting for something like nextxloud. Do you have a video or blog that would ELI5?
I’ve never experienced a wrong direktion. Sometimes I will ask you to hold right or left, do chose the right lane for you to travel in. Personally I like that.
I have chosen to pay for a webhotel for my domain/mail. There I have installed nextcloud, and it was painless. Then I just install the app, and that’s painless too… It just works.
Second CoMaps. Works great.
For AI use, Duck.ai is also helpful. Running one locally depends on your equipment, and theres some high requirements.
I would love to run something locally, but as of right now doing so is above my head. I’ll most likely choose between lumo, duck.ai, while I learn how to do it myself.
Ente has been such a blessing! I love it for photos and videos.
CoMaps is excellent, but I look forward to improved features like online routing.
Edit: and OnlyOffice has a fantastic interface.
Someone else mentioned ente. I’ll have to check that out as well.
Thanks!
Crpypad and LibreOffice both great Magic Earth for fairly reasonable traffic shaping, but not as good as Waze. I use Magic Earth Emails by Proton or Tuta mail/ calendar. I’m using both, but Tuta most IronFox, Cromite and Brave for android browsers. LibreWolf, Firefox, Brave on desktop Standard notes for erm, notes Signal as much as I can, but Whatsapp as others will not change RethinkDNS & firewall to protect my phone. Use Wireguard here if you already have a VPN VPN by Mullvad Ente photos desktop and phone Antenna pod for phone podcasts Newpipe for phone / Invidious for desktop
Good info. I tried Cryptpad and I didn’t like it but I forgot why, I added it to my list to check out again!
I’m an iPhone user….for now. Once I get more knowledgeable the plan is to get a pixel and run with Linux!
Once I do start using a VPN it will be mullvad. I’ve seen some of their ads and their pretty funny.
EDIT: I never thought about privacy when it comes to podcasts… 🤔. I’ll check out that app you suggested.
For photos, immich is great if you’re willing to self-host. It’s pretty much a drop-in replacement for Google photos, and lets you tweak the machine learning and stuff like that if you want automated identification of your photos. A raspberry pi is enough to get going, maybe something fancier if you want the machine learning. Google Drive can be replaced with Nextcloud as well if you go down the self-hosting rabbit hole.
Ente is probably your best bet if you don’t want to host anything yourself. I used proton drive for photos before but thought it wasn’t particularly suitable as if you’re looking for a particular photo it takes ages for it to load from their servers.
Sick. I’ll look into immich! Self hosting is my end goal for sure, and I have a raspberry pi to play with!
